Question XFS service in RH9 startup... what is it?


I noticed one of the serivces that starts up with the initial checklist when booting RH9 is "XFS"... What exaclty is this service?

Probably the font server for X-windows. Font handling in X is traditionally a can of worms. If you have a network just one PC can be set to provide fonts for all other machines, saving on configuration.

You can also see it in the /etc/services file, at port 7100, and maybe referenced again in your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file.
