Xfree86 tears and frustration

i keep getting an error stating that no screens are detected, i'm running a Radeon 9800, with an NEC acusync 75f monitor, i can not actually get into GUI, i just get terminal, and when i run startx, it gives me a no screen detected message, very frustrated

EDIT~ I'm trying a reinstall (Mandrake 9.2) and i have tried using all 3 Radeon options for Graphics card, all give me errors when tested, but its a blank error

i recommend this quite often, it has worked for me quite a few times. get urself a cd distro, knoppix, kanotix, etc. Boot it and it should hit most of ur hardware right on. open up the config file and take a look at the settings. then mount the partition with xfree and edit it

Powerman: download the latest ATI drivers from here
, follow the instructions, and run fglrxconfig (as the manual says) after youre done installing the drivers, this is the only way to get good 3d acceleration, and Im assuming you want it considering you have a 9800. Post if you have any problems, its really simple just follow the instructions to the t.

make sure the drivers support for your vid card.

You can see the error messages in the file:

/var/log/XFree86.0.log

For my nVidia I had to use the 'vesa' drivers to get my x-server working

You can not install the nVidia new drivers with some 'new install' of some distros, because the source files are not installed. in order to upgrade the drivers you would need to make a new kernel by yourself.
