XFree86 Post-install issue

Being a very green Linux-newbie, I decided to install XFree86 4.4.0.
It installed fine, but I ran into this problem upon reboot:

System starts up fine, and the graphical login starts just fine, but with a new little box entitled "console log." Wasn't there before.

Why I try to login, GNOME won't start--it either A) Displays a box telling me "Since you have only been logged in for less than 10 seconds, an installation error might have occurred" and logs me off, *OR*
B) Pops up a box telling me about some start-up Widget, and logs me off.

I figure the issue is Xfree86-related, but I'm not sure what it is. *sigh*

Any advice would be helpful!

ns2005,

seems like I fixed my own problem which I believe is the same problem you are having, except that I am running Red Hat Workstation 3. Hopefully, before the XF86Config installation, you backed up your previous X11 directory. What I did was, I copied the following directories in the backed up X11 directory into the current X11 directory:

fs
lbxproxy
proxymngr
twm
xdm
xinit
xsm

after copying, i rebooted, and voila! the problem disappeared. Hope this works for you.
