XFree86 on an hp pavillion xt1000 and debian 3.0

Working on getting X up and running correctly on an hp-pavillion xt1000 series laptop. The display is only about 70% of the viewable screen size, and centered. The mouse area is the same size, but doesn't correspond to the display (have to guess where you're clicking. I've googled around, and found, for instance, an XF86Config-4 file on a similar laptop, and various other things, but none seemed to work. I'm running 4.1.0-16 version of xfree86. The graphics card is an S3 savage pro ddr. I've dled the current savage driver file from www.probo.com for debian, which includes support for the prosavageddr line. I've tried various resolutions (including 1152x864, 1024x768, 800x600 at 24 and 16 bit resolutions). If the output of XFree86.0.log would be of help, I can append that.

The applicable parts of XF86Config-4:

Section "Device"
Identifier "S3 Video Card"
Driver "savage"
BusID "PCI:01:00:0"
VideoRam 32000
Option "UseFBDev" "true"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Laptop Screen"
HorizSync 28-49
VertRefresh 43-72
Option "DPMS"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "S3 Video Card"
Monitor "Laptop Screen"
DefaultDepth 16
SubSection "Display"
#the whole list of displays. Currently, this can be represented by:
Depth n
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
#where n is 1, 4, 8, 15, 16, and 24.
EndSubSection
EndSection

The default resolution in windowsxp home ed., which is what came w/ the laptop, was 1024x768.

Thanks in advance for any help/tips/ideas.
