Xfree86 - Blank and lost

Hi, i am a linux newbie and i recently installed Xfree86 and selected my display mode as vesa, so now i am stuck with a blank screen...
I tried hitting CTRL+SHIFT+BACKSPACE, CTRL+ALT+F1-6, ALT+F1-6.
Nothing happens, what should i do? Even CTRL+ALT+DEL does nothing.
I am desperate and lost, pls help me out of this situation :P

Press reset, on the lilo (grub) bootprompt
add init=3 to the kernel and undo what you
did ;)

Hi, Um, i'm kinda having trouble with those instructions...
*I AM N00B HEAR ME ROAR*
I entered "Linux init=3" when lilo popped up, but that didn't do anything, did i do that right?

Hard to say without seeing where you did what?

I don't know what debian looks like at the
lilo prompt, and whether the prompt for your
kernel is Linux, linux or cheese-cake...

init=3 trick???

:newbie:

Dear Tink,

After reading your init=3 suggestion I thought that maybe you could help me. First some background: My total number of hours using linux is less than 20. I just installed Slackware 9.1 in an old PC.

After the initial boot part my computer shows a LILO (v. 22.5.7.2) red box having "Linux" as the only option, also a "boot:" prompt is displayed. After selecting it, linux starts booting. However after some time I get the following consecutive three lines:
Freeing unused kernel memory (...)
Warning: Unable to open an initial console
Kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel

Well, after reading your post I tried using (in the "boot:" prompt):
linux init=3 [Enter key pressed]
linux -init=3 [Enter key pressed]
Linux init=3 [Enter key pressed]
Linux -init=3 [Enter key pressed]
Linux failsafe [Enter key pressed]

However I still get the Kernel panic (with the respective blinking Caps and Scroll LEDs).

Any idea on what I could try? Did any of my "init" tentatives make sense?

Thank you very much for your time and help.

Regards,

Davi

Welcome to LQ vikingdocerado

Are you sure your installation was all succesful?
Which "mode" did you chose? Full? What was
the partitioning scheme you chose? How big
is which partition, which filesystem type did you
pick for which partition? :)

Cheers,
Tink

P.S.: You really should have started a new
thread :} ... hi-jacking a thread is poor
nettiquette.

Sorry

Sorry, I just saw the init=3 suggestion and thought that it would be some simple thing. I will start a new one... :D

Still quite lost, i did the init=3 thing, but no change...
Any more suggestions?

sciboy 12-08-2003 04:47 AM

I am running GDM (Could you suggest something better), and it seems no matter what, i can't stop it from booting, any idea's?

If GDM doesn't start, X won't either and i could get it working again...
