If you're running Red Hat 9 you shouldn't have to upgrade your XFree86... It's basically the latest (4.3.0).

i am running rh9 but wine is telling me i need to....=/

*** Warning: X development files not found. Wine will be built without
*** X support, which currently does not work, and would probably not be
*** what you want anyway. You will need to install devel packages of
*** Xlib/Xfree86 at the very least.

this is what i get when i run the wineinstall file.

This isn't the same as telling you to upgrade your version of XFree... this is telling you to install the extra development portion of the program, which is needed ot compile stuff against.

You need to install an additional RPM. It's probably called XFree86-devel-4.3.0-2.i386.rpm and you should be able to find it on one of your Red Hat CDs.

To install an RPM easily, you can just:

-Become root (su)
-Run the command rpm -ivh /path/to/rpm/file.rpm
