Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

I run xfce 4.6.1 over Slackware 13.0 with nVidia GeForce 9600, driver version 185.18.31. I am currently caught up with Slackware -current. I've had this problem before: on starting X everything loads, the taskbar appears, but it is missing the power monitor and the status icons of programs I had running when I shut down last (usually just Audacious). Then the taskbar will disappear and reappear a few times and then will finally appear with the icons, and all is well. This is usually a precursor to other errors beginning to appear. I normally have my workspace switcher set to two rows but it will appear as one, for example, only when I try to set it as two, it tells me it is already set to two. Small stuff like that, but stuff that still shouldn't be happening. This problem can be temporarily solved by cloning the xfce settings from my other machine (wherein these problems do not occur (it has an older nVidia GeForce 6800)), but as time goes by it will destabilize again. Can anyone tell me where I would look to find out why this would be happening?
