xf86config - server error

Hi! I am really new to linux so I am really very sorry if I sound ignorant. Anyway, I have Mandrake Linux 10.0 and everytime I try to run startx, I get errors. It looks like this:

As it loads the modules and such...

(==) Log file: "/var/log/XFree86.0.log", Time :...(etc)
(==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/XF86Config-4"
(EE) No core pointer device specified
(EE) Unable to determine the screen layout
(EE) Error from xf86HandleConfigFile()

Fatal server error:
no screens found

XIO: fatal IO error 104 (connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

I have run xf86config quite a few times, trying different options. I wrote down all my hardware names and drivers and such, and even plugging those in I seem to reap the same result. I am running this as my only operating system (if that means anything other than I am running everything from commands) but have windows on another hard drive so if I need to check anything else I can do that. Can I change the perimeters by opening the file in a text program or anything? Plug and play doesn't work either (though I didn't expect it to). I was just wondering if anyone could help lead me to liberation from my frustration.... ^.^ Thank you soooo much to anyone can help. I really really appreciate it! Please lead me to the light!!

I would boot up knoppix and compare its XFconfig-4 with yours,if you need it download and burn it from windows,its nice to have around,or try to do xf86config again and pick vesa and generic monitor generic mice ect.What kind of monitor graphics card and mouse do you have?

Hi! I'm trying to get Knoppix but my dl keeps timing out (but I'll get it eventually - can't help my capped connection!) I unfortunetly have a "plug and play" monitor, according to windows, but it can do 1280 X 1024 True Color (32 bit) at 60 Hertz. My grapics adapter is a Diamond Multimedia Fire GL 1000 Pro (which I can find on the list, number 164 when I am trying to load it). The chip is a 3Dlabs Permedia2. My mouse is a regular PS/2 compatible. It is one of those mice that instead of using a ball it uses infared light. It came with drivers, but I didn't need them when I used windows XP. Do you think I should try another mouse? I don't know, since it said it can't find a pointer (or something). I looked into the video codec section and they tell me it is a Legacy card ( I THINK). Though, I have tried all these different options and it seems that none work. :*( Hopefully you can help me! Thank you sooooo much!

Make sure under graphics device section "device" Driver "glint" the mouse should be ok and the monitor just make sure HorizSync and VertRefresh is right and it should be ok.
your card is here; http://www.linux.com/howtos/Hardware-HOWTO/video.shtml

Hi. I do have the device set as "glint" and it doesn't work. :( I get the same error if I put the generic 3d labs permedia glint option OR the Diamond Multimedia Fire GL 1000 Pro. Although, I noticed something each time it trys to load. When I finish with the xf86config configuration, it writes the file to xf86config. However, when I load startx, it tells me it reads from xf86config-4. Does that mean something? It it writing to the wrong file, or reading from the wrong file? If so, how can I go about changing that? Does it even matter? Thanks for your help! Thank you thank you thank you!!

You shouldn't have any problems your card is supported,the mouse should be fine check the settings with the monitor.Mayby you got a bad install or something?
also unplug everything except the monitor keyboard and mouse and try that,just a quess?:scratch: :scratch:

Thanks for your help! It turned out to be the monitor. I messed with some settings and finally got it to work. :)
