XF86Config compared to XF86Config-4

I just installed my new ATI Radeon 9600 Pro video card and got the drivers installed but I have what I think should be an easy problem.

After going through the fglrxconfig setup it wrote a file to XF86Config-4 and I have XF86Config already being used. How do I tell my system to use this one (XF86Config-4) instead of the other one. Or is that not a good idea. Can I just do a link (ln -s XF86Config XF86Config-4) and be done or is it something more complex than that??

You could do a symlink, on most systems that wouldn't be a problem. You should always backup any files before overwriting them like that though, just in case something doesn't turn out, you can always revert back to the working version.

The historical difference between the 2 files is actually pretty obvious, even though it's not a standard followed practice, the XF86Config-4 file is used when you are working with XFree86 of version 4.x, and the XF86Config is for previous versions. But, as I mentioned, this is not always the case, and doesn't seem to be as common a practice as one would think.

Cool

The symlink doesn't work. I've tried the drivers for version 4.3 of XF86 from both ATI and from http://www.Schneider-Digital.de/html/download_ati.html but both of them want to write a XF86Config-4 file instead of just a XF86Config file. I don't see any place to choose one or the other and when it installs it says it installs properly.

Anyone using SuSE 8.2 and get the ATI drivers installed properly??
