.xinitrc

Hi guys,

I'm trying to install a NVIDIA driver that requires that X not run. I'm running Redhat 9 and KDE restarts automatically when I Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to kill it. I'd like to edit my .xinitrc file to not run X automatically but I can't for the life of me remember what to put in it.

Thanks,
-n00b.

Type Ctrl+Alt+F1 and then log in as root.

Then type 'init 3' and you're X is shut off. Now install the driver(s) and for restarting X, type 'init 5'.

Excellent smithers, thats the ticket. but say now I'd like the machine to boot into init 3 instead of starting X. What would I do?

Thanks!

In your inittab file near the bottom change the 5 to 3.
