How do I replace this file? I was trying out different monitors, because I have a Samtron 76v, however it is not in the list of Samtrons, so I was trying different things, and my vertical sync went out of range. Also, does anyone know how I can make sure this won't happen again, while at the same time allowing me to get the optimal configuration for my monitor?

Doesn't anyone know the answer to this? Also, do you think Mandrake would have been a better choice? This is the first time ever using Linux for me...

What distrobution is this? Each distro makes their own tools for making and altering this file. The tools that usually come with XFree86 itself are:
xf86config
xf86cfg
XFree86 -configure #For v4.x+only

Make backups of it. Just make a copy in the same directory.

You just asked if Mandrake was a better choice. Compared to what?

Well as you now see I'm using RedHat. But as soon as I boot into Linux (after its system checks and such) it says this message. Is there any way I can fix this? Also, if Mandrake would have been a better choice, I'm willing to switch, as I haven't really learned anything about RedHat yet.

Oh wait, I never said I was using RedHat, sorry...

And bouncing the message up after an
exhaustive 15 minutes wait is not really
good style, mate.

I didn't have that intention, Tink. I just wanted to ask if Mandrake is really a better newby choice after reading another thread...

Since you have Red Hat, you can add the Red Hat tools to the list. Not sure what they are called though. Check out the Red Hat site to find out. I think they vary from version to version.

The list of tools I mentioned earlier that you can use for making & altering your /etc/X11/XF86Config.
Find out what the Red Hat tools for this are called at their site, and use em' to make your XF86Config. They are probably easier than the tools that come with XFree86.

I believe the tool for that purpose in RH is
called XConfigurator or Xconfigurator or
something to that effect.. Boot into single mode
(pass single as a parameter to your kernel
from your bootloader) and try
X<tab> and then look at the executables
it offers you. Or use
XF86Config -configure
If all else fails,
xf86config
and make sure you know your hardware well ;)

Okay, I feel stupid now for having so many posts. Thanks for the info, but what you must have missed from before is that as soon as Linux boots to where you would normally login (graphical mode) it says vertical sync of of range, and I can't do anything, because I have selected the wrong configuration for my monitor. Now, I have to fix that first, don't I? :-P

Sorry, but you'll have to be patient with me. I know nothing about Linux except that it's better than Windows if used right. Therefore, you'll have explain everything to me...sorry.

I installed Linux yesterday with no knowledge of it. That may have been a bad idea but tomorrow I'll start really reading up on it. However, I need to fix this problem, and see no way of doing so.

I just edited my post and you can see I don't know how to do this....I apologize I know this can be displeasing, but if you'd walk me through it, I'll have my problem solved, and will make sure not to make this mistake again, and even if I do, I'll know how to solve it for good and won't have to ask again. I'll try to make this my last post here.
