I'm trying to connect to my box remotely. I was able to set it up by sshing and forwarding x stuff to the local x server (xwin32 on win2kpro). Now I'd like to get rid of some of the hoops i jump through (start xwin32, ssh to box, xterm -display, /foo/bar/window manger) and just be able to start a connection from the local machine via xwin32.

I got XDM to be running now, I can connect to my remote box, but I can only get gnome to run, it starts by default. I've been playing around with fvwm, and would like to continue to do so, but I don't know where XDM get's its window manager from.

Any hints?

yeah I found it (with some help) in my Xsession file. i didn't have an executable .xsession in ~/ or a .Xclients , so the last part of the Xsession went straight to /etc/X11/xinit/Xclients which defaults to Gnome.

to fix it I chmod 700 on my ~/.xsession and everything worked.
