xbox 360constantly losing connection to my Ubuntu laptop
 

Hello,

I tried to post this question in the General section, it didn't work and I was more or less redirected here, so here comes.

First of all, I don't want to start a flamewar about XBox or PS3. I bought the Xbox because friends of mine have one to. It is fun to play on Xbox Live. Now for the problem.

When I wanted to connect my (Ubuntu) laptop to the Xbox to share music, movies and so forth. In the beginning I used Ushare, a nice little program. The only problem I had was that the Xbox lost connection every 5 minutes or so. I blamed it on Ushare, so I tried another program, XBMC. It looks great and is easy to use. The only thing is, that the problem still exists. I changed the network settings on the Xbox from, manual to automatic, but that didn't help. I searched the Internet (well, the pages Google offered me anyway) but couldn't find a solution, to this problem.

Here is some further background information:

- My router has uPnP enabled.
- The connection to the router from my Xbox is wired.
- The laptop is using a wireless connection to my router.
- I use Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope).

The strange thing is that everything seems to work, because I can play a couple of songs for example.

Too be honest, I have no idea if this is a Linux problem, a Ubuntu problem or a Xbox problem, or a combination of them. I don't own a computer loaded with BillieVanilli software, so I can't test that. Is there anybody experiencing the same problem, or am I the only one :cry: ?

Seems like there are a lot of places this could be going wrong. Streaming to the 360 from non-MS platforms is a little picky in the first place because of intentional limitations Microsoft put into the 360 firmware. The available streaming software tries to work around this, but as you would expect it doesn't always go so well.

The first thing I would probably try though would be to directly connect the 360 to the laptop over Ethernet, and start streaming some videos. If you have no problems with the two machines directly connected, then obviously it is a network issue rather than a software issue.

My gut instinct tells me that the problem might be the wireless between the laptop and the router not being robust enough to handle streaming for long periods of time. I have streamed media over WiFi in the past, and issues like you are talking about had a tendency to pop up once and awhile.
