xampp installation problem on linux

Sir, I have installed xampp-linux 1.63b version on ubuntu-8.04. During installation i din't come across any errors but when i browse http://localhost on my mozilla then i am getting--------------------- "THE REQUESTED URL COULD NOT BE RETRIEVED". can u tell what could be the problem and how to fix it.
please help me soon....

Ok. But did you configure it after the installation? And is the server running?

i have used " apt-get install xampp " command for installation of xampp and it din't ask for any configuration. but my xampp server is running.

Apt will install the server with the dependencies but it will not configure it for you. Will have to edit the configuration files for it manually.

Ok. Another thing to ask is, did you start the service?

hi,
if you can download Xampp package for linux, you can install it manually with the terminal like...
(command for install)
sudo tar xvfz xampp-linux-1.7.2.tar.gz -C /opt

after you complete the installation you can start it like..
sudo /opt/lampp/lampp start
