X windows stucked at grey screen
Hi guys,
I am running Kubuntu 5.04. I installed Fluxbox through Synaptic and everything seems well, till I opted to start Fluxbox. it just stayed at the grey screen. Rebooting or restarting X would cause me to go to get stuck at the grey screen. Mouse is working fine, and there is a hint of a toolbar at the bottom. KDM never appeared again. KDM is my only login manager. I have tried editting /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc and turn off my autologin and made sure that KDE is my default windows manager but none helped. My questions are: 1. How can I revive KDM? 2. is there any hot key that allows me to go to console login from X and possibly alloms me to start KDE? Thanks. :) |

i guess if you don't like it un-opt it you didn't say how you opted it in the first place the trick is most likely the script ~/.xinitrc or ~/.xsession the secret word is startkde as for kdm thats started on boot to a certain run level - there is a link in the runlevel folder to /etc/init.d folder kdm script so i can't imagine that is changed to see what runlevel you use look at /etc/inittab and look at the default runlevel line most likely all you need to do is put startkde in ~/.xsession |
I opted to start fluxbox from the KDM. You mean that grey screen is fluxbox? There is nothing for me to click on, just a plain blank grey screen with a mouse cursor.
Will try what you have suggested. |
My default runlevel is 2.
At the grey screen I pressed ctrl alt bckspc and while it is loading up I pressed a lot of combination of keys including alt up and ctrl up and miracullously KDM appeared. :) i have not been able to find the 2 files that you mentioned. Are they under root directory? |
Btw my problem is solved... by uninstalling fluxbox. :)
