X windows session freezing
 

I am running RH9 on a HP Netserver LH3 which has an inbuilt Cirrus graphics card which only has 1mb RAM apparently. This means that I can only get 640x480 resolution which is rubbish.
I've since added an ati Mach64 3D rage II card which allows me a nice 1024x768.
However, since adding this card, I've noticed the system seems to freeze - I thought initiall only in an x windows session but it seems to be from command line also. The mouse and kbd do not respond and the only way out of it that I know of is a system reset (ie power down and on).
Could this be down to the graphics card? It does seem very coincidental.
The next step I will be doing will be to decrease the resolution - what other troubleshooting steps can I take?

One other thing - where would I find rc.inet1?

Welcome to LinuxQuestions.org. Check your /var/log/messages for possible clues of system crashes, specially about the xfree86. There's a bunch of log files there that you may like to look at as well.

Also, make sure that you have your onboard graphics card disable on the bios and that your ran xf86config when you boot linux to configure your new card properly (you will be asked for a couple of questions there, as mouse, keyboard, graphics card, monitor and etc... make they very precisely). That's all I can recommend :)

oops, since you are on Redhat, use this command instead for configuring your graphics card:

redhat-config-xfree86

if I remember correctly. It has been a long time since I last used Redhat :)

There doesn't seem to be anywhere in BIOS to disable.
I tried it at a lower res and that didn't work - still froze.
Nothing in message log or XF* log
I've tried a different PCI slot and it seems to have improved so maybe that was the problem.
The only other thing that it could have been was my network as it kept dropping off the network but I think I've fixed that too.

A side note though: I have had often kernel panics with Linux using an inbuilt Intel network card. Took me a while to find out the reason of kernel panics, but changing the card for the cheapest I could find, fixed the problem :). If you still have crashes and an unbuilt network card, try placing a 9 bucks card in there and see how it goes ;)
