X suddenly crashing

Problems started this morning and I don't know why. No changes to the system, save for an install of the RH version of Yahoo Messenger. Rebooted, logged back in, typed "startx", saw it tried to load then fail.

Bunch of messages like this:
(WW) VESA (0): Failed to set up write-combining range (0Xc3c000,0x1f000)
(WW) VESA (0): Failed to set up write-combining range (0Xc3c000,0x3f000)

Couldn't find anything on the boards or via google that did me any good.

Removed XF86Config and made a new one, but it didn't help, and I've really got no idea about what I should be changing (if there's something I need to change) as i've never had to edit XF86Config before, with the exception of tweaking it to recognize my mouse. If seeing the log or actual config file will help, let me know and I'll throw it up.

Not really an issue as I planned on nuking my slack install this weekend and upgrading from 9.0 to 9.1 ((yay for downloading ISOs on dialup, heh!)) but there are times when it's nice to be able to load a window manager, you know?

seems my gfx chip's drivers went awol. no clue how it happened, but my problem's solved.

thanks. i must be a glutton for punishment because i'm thinking i might DL another distro when i've finished downloading slack. it's weird because i've downloaded a number of ISOs in the past, but thsi will be the first i actually bother to install.

Oops, I did it again. Someone jump in and save me -- my last solution was a total reinstall of slack, and I'd rather not go that route again if there's a better way :P

Reinstalled yahoo, logged out, logged in, started X and watched X go kerboom (note to self: do NOT reinstall yahoo messenger because it clearly does not like you).

Did you try to uninstall yahoo messenger? Maybe that will correct the problem.

yeah i did and it didnt help... so i did another re-install. i wish i could figure out what's going on and why. oh well, maybe i'll post a message to the unix clients' yahoo group and see if someone there can shed some light on it. in the mean time, i'll try finding another client that will actually allow me to connect.
