Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

This is my first message here, and I've got a bit of a problem. I've been using Linux for a while, but still consider myself a newbie
I've tried upgrading XFree86 to Version 4.4.0. I made sure I came out of X first by running telinit 3 from a command line. I ran the installer as per the instructions. After the installer finished, I ran XF86config to do a basic configeration of Xfree86.
I rebooted the computer, and when it tried to run X Server I got the error message :-
INIT : Switching to run level 3 INIT : Sending processes to term signal assign raw devices :/Dev/DVD [OK]
I then tried to run run xserver by typing start x but got a long list of errors which include (and I hope I got all of them)
_XSERVTranssocketopenCOTSserver: unable to open socket for
inet6 _XSERVTransopen: Transport open failed for inet6/localhost.local domain _XSERVTransmakeallCOTSserverlisteners: Failed to open listeners for inet6 (==) logfile :"/var/log/xfree86.0.log" (==) using config file : "/etc/x!!/xf86config-4" (EE) No devices detected Fatal Server Error No screen found
XIO: Fatal IO error 104 (connectionn rejected by peer) on X Server ":0.0" after 0 reuqests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining
I've tried running XF86config again as root and chaing the monitor and gfx cards to minimal settings (monitor to VGA and generic VGA card) but with the same settings. I've also tried the generic NVIDIA driver and correct monitor settings as well.
I'm running Mandrake 8.2, monitor is a Gateway EV700 and GFX card is Geforce FX5600.
I really hope someone can help me to get my problem solved.
