I managed to read the /var/log/Xorg.0.log after changing its permission!

line 2: This: command not found
line 3: It: command not found
line 4: Bugs: command not found
line 5: Select: command not found
Line 6: Before: command not found
line 7: latest: command not found
line 8: See: command not found
line 10: X.Org: command not found
line 11: Release: command not found

Unrecognized option: Protocol

(in the middle around 150 or so lines seems ok to me if there is anything you want me to look for let me know)

Then at the end-

Fatal server error:
Unrecognized option: Protocol

line 13: Build: command not found
line14: Current: command not found
line 15: Build: command not found
line 17: Before: command not found
line 18: to: command not found
line 19: Module: command not found
line 20: syntax error near unexpected token '--'
line 20: 'Markers--) probed, (**) from config file, (==) default setting,'

As for the xorg.conf

displays only from line 13 to line 153 and all of them whatever it said before the ':' symbol all were command not found.

Thank you for your patience,
Cheers

You are not supposed to execute xorg.conf, but to view it.

less /etc/X11/xorg.conf

or vim /etc/X11/xorg.conf

1. What are exactly the errors that you get when you startx?
2. Try replacing 'nv' with 'vesa' in

Quote:
Section "Device"
BoardName "GeForce 9600 GT"
BusID "1:0:0"
Driver "nv"
Identifier "Device[0]"
VendorName "NVidia"
EndSection
3. Use a pen drive to copy your assignment onto your laptop to finish it.

In SuSE, startx won't work. You will be denied permission backing up the old /var/log/Xorg.0.conf file. Start X from the kdm menu. E.G. run in run level 5.

If you are in run level 3 in the terminal:
sudo /sbin/init 5

startx did not work in run level 5 either!

xauth: creating new authority file /root/.serverauth.3752

this is a pre release version of the X server from the X.Org foundation.
it is not supported in any way.
bugs may be filed in the bugzilla at http://bugs.freedesktop.org/
select the 'xorg' product for bugs you find in this release.
before reporting in pre release versions please check the latest version in the X.Org foundation git repoitory.
see http://wiki.x.org/wiki/gitpage for git access instructions.

Replacing nv with vesa (as root):
1. Open xorg.conf for editing:

Quote:
vim /etc/X11/xorg.conf
2. Press 'i'
3. Navigate to the relevant line with arrow keys
4. change nv to vesa manually
5. press the escape key (esc), press ':wq' + enter

To mount your pendrive (as root):

1. fdisk -l
In order to find out which device is your pendrive (sdb1? sdc1?, etc.)
2. Create a directory eg.
Quote:
mkdir /media/pendrive
3. mount your pendrive. Assuming that it's sdb1 it'll be:
Quote:
mount /dev/sdb1 /media/pendrive
or
Quote:
mount -t vfat /dev/sdb1 /media/pendrive
(if it's formatted as windows fat)

Thank you for this tip, I have copied the files I need to finish my assignment. My flash drive was sdc, but when I take it out and put it again it becomes sdd and I have to mount it again at sdd1. Is there any way that can be stopped, if not every time I use it is going to change.

Do you know where my evolution email data, such as the mails and addresses would be stored?

Mean while the original problem is still there!
I really appreciate your patience with me.

Cheers,

Hi,

Now I have managed to uninstall the driver, but even after that in the xorg.conf file I had to replace the nvidia with nv and I am back in control now.

I am going to take a full back up tomorrow and then we will try again.

If someone can guide me as to how I can find the right driver

Thanks guys,
Cheers
