X resolutions for KDE 3.1 not working correctly

I've recently installed KDE 3.1 on a new install of debian (sarge) and can't seem to get the resolutions to work correctly. In XF86Config-4 my default depth is 24 and the modes for it are "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" but all i get in KDE is a HUGE desktop. On an 18" LCD I have to scroll to the left/right/up/down to reach the actual edge of the desktop. Ctrl + Alt + + doesn't work at all. I can't find this problem on any other boards so I decided to post here. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Running KDE 3.1 on XFree86 4.3

What you have is a virtual screen. In the Xf86-4 config file under screen section you will most likely have your resolution listed as virtual.
I have same problem with mandrake 10.After some investigation i have lernt that it is some thing to do with not having correct modelines. I have not yet solved this but i am still working on it .In the interiim i have configured my ati 7000 card to use FBDEV driver .this solves the virtual problem but fps is to slow for gaming. I sujjest you post a bit more info IE graphic card and also post a copy of your XF86config-4 file .
Good Luck
Regards Sharkee

Ok, I've got it working correctly now. Here's my XF86Config-4 file.
I too am running an ati radeon 7000/VE. Maybe this will help you too.
Also by looking at this file can anyone help me get the scrollwheel working on my mouse? It's a GE micro optical mouse with scroll wheel plugged into the PS/2 port via a USB to PS/2 adapter. Thanks for the help.

Back up your XF86config(4) file first
then try editing like this

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Configured Mouse"
Driver "mouse"
Option "CorePointer"
Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
Option "Protocol" "PS/2" edit to "IMPS/2"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "true" edit to "false" or comment out this line
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection

the following section should be commented unless you have a touchpad or similar
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Generic Mouse"
Driver "mouse"
Option "SendCoreEvents" "true"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
Option "Protocol" "ImPS/2"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "true"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection
