Did you type startx at the prompt after logging in ? You should get an error message if X fails to start , good luck.

As root, edit
Code:
/etc/inittab
set the runlevel to
Code:
5 Multi-User mode with display manager
However, did you try
Code:
startx
any errors?

Kind regards

to repeat

Did 12.1 ever run on this unknown hardware ?

What is the hardware?

Is it supported ( not 10+ years old )
Do you have a 3d card or "chip"
If so
Is it ATI or Nvidia?

is the hardware 32 bit or 64 bit?
is the OS 32 bit or 64 bit ?

and VERY important
what is the boot error in the log say?
what is the error in
/var/log/boot.log
/var/log/messages

After I entered:
Code:
/etc/inittab
i got an error that said: "-bash: /etc/initabb: Permission denied

And yes, I was logged in under "root"

You need to open the file with an editor
try
Code:
vi /etc/inittab
Could you please answer all the other questions in this thread?

Kind regards
