Unhappy X gives me a blank screen in Mandrake 10 official

Installing Mandrake 10 official from CD's onto a Dell inspiron 5000 labtop.

Everything goes fine - but does not find graphics card by itself.

I give it Rage mobility or Rage mobility P which is what it says on Dell.
Tried many different combinations of screen and resolutions in drakconf - nothing works.

Knoppix also can't recognize the graphics chip, but comes up with a standard VGA setting OK

Any guesses?

I set up 10 in my girlfriends Latitude D600 which also has the moblity, It automatically picked the ATI (fglrx) for video card at install, works fine Don't know if that help you or not.

Would it be possible to copy the settings from that one?

inspiron 5000 has a larger display and resolution - does one have to hit the right resolution to get a picture?

the only settings there where was ati (fglrx) 1024x768 24bpp if your screen is bigger with higher resolution might not work, but I can try to get the files out of it next time she brings the laptop over. Also did you know the Dell does support linux...to a degree check it out, the page is a little messy but helped me with hers Dell Linux Support

Choose "ATI Rage Mobility P" as card, and "Dell 1400x1500 Laptop Display Panel" as monitor.

But the key is to add a line "vga=2" to /etc/lilo.conf and run lilo again, then reboot.

Worked for me...
