x console screen?

Greetings-

I've recently installed Suse Linux 9.3 (not without problems). The machine kept locking up at various points in loading. tweaked some of the bios settings (Phoenix Bios) and finally got it to complete. Once i had everything configured things seemed okay for a while 'til the system locked up again while checking the config in yast. Locked up again. Rebooted the system. Did a sys chek and repair. Rebooted. Now for some reason I have a login screen that takes me to another screen with xconsole icon up in the left corner and a bash editor. How does one get back to the kde desk top?

System locking up seems very much like a hardware problem.

Does this locking up happen at random or does a sequence of events seem to trigger it off?

I'm quite sure it is a hardware problem. Most likely memory or video card related.

Thanks for your reply. I have set my system up with removable hard drives, so I also run XP with no problems. So it may be that linux is more demanding or XP is more forgiving. Not sure. Ichecked the manual and made a couple of changes to the bios. It seems better as far as lock ups but I'm still stuck with the xconsole screen. Is there a way to migrate back to my KDE desk top from there or do I need to re-install from scratch?
Also, during installation the lock up happened randomly. I ended up unplugging most of my usb devices and used the dvd disc instead of the cd's. It ran a little slower but completed the setup.

For getting back X, you need to reconfigure it. No need to reinstall anything.

Have you tried executing either of these commands from the console as a root user?

Code:

xf86config

or

Code:

xorgconfig

You should run the first one if you still are on XFree86 and you should run the second if you're using Xorg. Most likely you'll be using Xorg. Try either and see which command exists on your system.

Once you configure it. Log in as a regular user and then type

Code:

startx

to get into your GUI mode.

This is very possible. Windows usually runs on faulty hardware, but also may give problems (like BSODs for instance). With Linux, it's either it works fully or doesn't work at all. Very rarely have I seen Linux run on faulty hardware.
