No it doesn't... I just get a message - failed, error code 8

Apparently error code 8 is a problem with the scripts that it uses in the ppp folder. I have no idea what the problem is.

I'm at my wits end to be honest. I keep having enthusiasm to migrate to Linux (I really want to) but there is no printer driver availiable for my printer, and no way I can get the modem to dial up. This is somewhat limiting.

Is there any other check to find out what is wrong?
Why error code 8? What script is wrong?
Why does wvdial keep saying I haven't given it the data it needs?

I'll try to learn anything, but just seem at a dead end at the moment... :-(

The great thing about linux is that there are usually a lot
of different ways to do something. Here is a link to another
way to connect using pppd and a chat_connect script.
In order to keep this thread on topic, here are two links
about pppd you could post too, should you decide to change
your approach.

Well thanks for that mjolnir That first link is excellent!

And guess what.... success of a sort!!!!!!!

I went to http://open.nit.ca/wiki/ and posted a question there and it was suggested to:
- add a blank line before [dialer Evemail] and
- type wvdial Evemail to get things started

I did this and bing my modem dialled out!!! It failed a couple of times to connect properly, but then authorised and worked.

I was SO pleased, but then arose my new problem.... My Browser and Email program (Mozilla and Evolution) both were unable to connect to the 'net.

I checked and my phone line was busy making modem'computer noises, but neither program would connect. Mozilla said it was online (but wasn't) and I connected and disconnected it using its icon, but to no avail.

If you have any ideas, post 'em up, but in the meantime I'll go and see what I can find out.

Once again thanks for the help
Adrian

Me too!

Thanks for all the help. I've learned loads about Linux trying to solve the modem problem, and although I still haven't sorted it totally, I'm well on the way!

Cheers
Adrian
