Wvdial in Fedora 13 - how to?

I've mostly been using versions of Ubuntu over the last 4 years, but recently found myself with an office Aspire 751h with the dreaded Poulsbo graphix jobby. I've got it running on Jolicloud for web surfing, but needed something more robust and due to lack of recent (I need latest Open Office) working and supported Ubuntu for this hideous chip, installed Fedora 13 (I heard a good chap called Adam had done work on this with Fedora), which appeared better than Mint 8 I had tried, where the graphics were still jumpy.
Now normally I just edit wvdial.conf and off I go with my CDMA connection...
Tried everything but can't get sudo access to the file, or a root login as I can in ubuntu variants.
What can I try? My last hope might be mandriva, otherwise it's could be a win 7 install which I really don't want to do (but it's an office netbook). Any ideas ?
Next, any ideas on Poulsbo support in Fedora 13?
Replies much appreciated!

not quite following but does su - ask for your root passwd ?

maybe posting the output of cat /etc/passwd will help ?

It asks for root password but after i give it, it says I'm not a member of 'sudoers' and that I'll be reported.

All I need to do is to be able to edit the wvdial.conf file in oder to access the net.

cheers and thanks for your reply.

Are you sure you're typing "su -", not "sudo -" or "sudo su -"?

^ else you can try to log in as root without using su - or sudo and run visudo.

what kind of phone do you have by the way ?
