I had to do things a little differently with SuSE 8.2. I followed the instructions provided in the second link, sections 3.1 and 4.1, but instead of following the instructions in section 3.2, I located the "group" file in the /etc directory and edited it using pico. Next, I added my username to the "wvdial" line in the file and saved it. Voila--it worked. :)
