wrong display colors/resolution with ATI

Hi everybody, thank you in advance for any help.
I just installed slack12.2 on an Aspire M3641 (was a pain but I did it). At the startup you can clearly see that the resolution of the penguins on the monitor is really poor and once I startX the colors are completely wrong and the resolution is very low in quality. I can't read words, therefore I can't do anything. Tried several different environments but had the same problem. I thought was a faulty driver (graphic card is ATI HD3450) and downloaded the new one for linux, installed and nothing changed.
Any ideas?
thank you,
Aion

Have you tries changing X.org configuration? That may change things. If you need assistance to tell you where to look and what to post, just write.

The penguins at startup have nothing to do with X. You need to check your framebuffer settings in /etc/lilo.conf (and rerun the lilo command if you maek any changes to the file). In my case, vga=791 works best.

As to X, you need to reconfigure it, since you probably are still in the framebuffer mode. Run xorgconfig, answer all questions. If not satisfied with the result, install the fglrx driver and run aticonfig --initial
