Ah, ok, thanks, I do feel somewhat less dumb unfortunately, at the rate I post (at least about new stuff), I'll hit that somewhere about 30 mins after they put me in the ground, lol.

for lack of option, I'll throw my other question out this way (apologies for mixing topics): I've also got a toshiba satellite LT that the power buttons crapped out on. Found a replacement online, but my solder skills are basic, and I've never cracked a laptop. any idea how hard replacement would be? And another I just thought of, without having a huge cache of hardware knowledge, is there a resource out there to figure out if a laptop can be modified in any meaningful way?

And on the original q, I just got my second attempt on knoppix dl'd, the first was a german language version ( didn't realize that the mirrors might have different versions...again, see previous noob coments. We'll see how this does,
thanks
J

I have slitaz on a USB drive and a DVD with other stuff like partedmagic and AntiX. I don't use it regularly at all but I've found really impressive how it revived an old laptop (I don't recall the specs though) that had Windows XP on it. With windows it was like, "ok, I'm turning it on now, so I think I'll go to the kitchen downstairs and get a cup of coffee", and "ok, I'm opening firefox, so I guess it's a good time to have another cup of coffee", but with slitaz it was just like what you would expect from some up-to-date hardware running normal OS.

On some machines it won't detect the correct resolution though, or even networking I guess, whereas antiX does. But in the other hand in this very same laptop AntiX didn't even work.

I'm unsure. Even within a single brand/series there can sometimes be differences between the hardware which can affect how hard it is to open the laptop and get to the internal parts.

It shouldnt be too hard. It will probably be fiddly.

About the only suggestion I can come up with is to get the full model number for your laptop and use that as a search term along with 'upgrade' or 'mod'.

OK, very interested, looking into slitaz now, the other 2 will be next on the list. how are they for the uninitiated?

thanks, I'm gonna leave that project where its been (on the furthest back burner) at least until I get my feet under me as far as other projects go. both LTs are essentially "salvage" anyway, so I'm not sweating it.

And on the knoppix front...once again, got it, burned it, and its in german....starting to think its some kind of hazing, where the hell is the eng version? trying again, LOL

thanks for the patience everyone,
J
