there is a application called "wallpapoz", through it, you can set different background for different workspaces, and also, configure it to show different wallpaper after an interval, and when ever you switch the workspace.

for the second question there is a command called "uptime" , go to the terminal and type "uptime", the output will be like this

root@xxxx yyyyy]# uptime
14:49:44 up 35 min, 2 users, load average: 0.07, 0.76, 0.79

also , you can install screenlets , in screenlets, there is widget which shows all the things like services running, cpu and ram usage, and uptime, ip etc.

Thanks and Regards,
Ashwini

Yes, you can set a different wallpaper for each workspace. Install Wallpapoz (through synaptic or yum). This application allows you to set separate wallpaper for each workspace. Also, through this application you can set the wallpapers to change automatically after an interval and when ever you will switch workspace. Also, you can configure number of workspace in a pager (the right end where we see all the workspace), you will have to digg about it a little.
