Workscreens doesn't work

I'm a new Linux-user with a long experience with Windows. I have installed Kubuntu (with the Gnome interface) alongside my Windows installation, on a separate harddisk.

I have defined 3 workscreens, and here is my problem: Only one of the screens work. Everything seems to be up to date.

Can anyone help with this annoyance?

Does this mean you are using KDE (if so KDE3 or KDE4?), or gnome?

- You have three monitors ?
- You have three GUI logins running concurrently ?
- You have three desktops in the one GUI ?
- ... Or something else ?

I use Kubuntu with the Gnome interface. As to the second question, I have defined 1 physical screen with three seperate workspaces (how can I explain better?), having for instance Firefox running in one virtual screen, system monitor and terminal window in the second screen and Gimp in a third, so I can switch fast.

The problem is, I can only use one virtual monitor (sorry about my terminology), I cant change between the windows.

You installed Kubuntu and replaced KDE with Gnome?

As for the second thing, it still doesn't make a lot of sense. Do you mean the workspaces? What do you understand virtual monitor to mean in this context?

I mean the workspaces. Thanks for your patience, but I'm very new to this.

I think he means Desktops,

In KDE I have a thing that sits on my panel called Pager. It shows me a tiny icon of what each desktop looks like. Clicking on any of them moves me instantly to that Desktop.

Gnome must have one of these, but I don't use gnome so don't know what it is called, or where to look for it.
Any gnome users reading this?

There's nothing wrong with installing gnome on kubuntu, or installing KDE on ubuntu, I'm just too lazy, and like KDE3 too much.

I installed a 64-bit Ubuntu and wrote

sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

in the console. It worked fine, until 2-3 days ago, now I'm stuck with one workspace, even though 3 are predefined.
Does that make any sense?

I can SEE the workspaces in my process line, but cant switch to the other 2....

Installed Ubuntu and did a
sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

Okay, so whats the problem with the workspaces? Are you having trouble switching between them?

@tredegar: Yes, I'm well aware of what OP means, though they do tend to be called workspaces, not desktops, and yes, I'm aware changing DEs is possible, and yes I'm aware you can do this with the *buntu distros, I was ensuring that, as a new-user, OP was sure they were using Gnome.

That's excactly the problem. Key-combinations doesnt work, neither does clicking on the workspace with the mouse.

Does this link help you ?
You need the Workspace Switcher applet on your bottom panel.
If it's not there, you will need to add it.
