Woody Debian and network problems

Hi there. My original problem was getting my nForce2 to work with Linux at all.

Now I've downloaded the source for the 2.6.5 kernel, but in order to use modules with it I need module-init-tools, which won't run without libc6 being a newer version than the one I have. So I just decided to not use modules and compiled everything I need into my kernel.

Now I have a kernel with forcedeth included in it (not a module) and when I boot up I don't have a network connection; the only thing that shows up in ifconfig is 'lo', which I'm guessing is loopback.

I have no idea what to do now. I would like to try to make forcedeth a module and see how that works, but I can't get module-init-tools to install on Debian woody. Or, I'd like to try to configure my 2.6.5 compiled kernel which supports forcedeth, but which I can't seem to get to work. Can anyone help please?

Thanks in advance.

Oh, and I've tried using 2.6.4, too.

try to upgrade to debian Sid, it's not in any way more difficult than debian woody and is much more recent

have you compiled a kernel before (i.e. you know what selections are necessary for your kernel to work properly)?
make sure to include the correct drivers for your server, and CONFIG_PACKET and CONFIG_FILTER if you're behind a proxy (I tell you this because I had this problem before)

good luck!
