Methinks you are heading the wrong way. You had VBox installed, so I guess you need it? So rebuild the VBox modules for your new kernel and the warning goes away.

I pulled out the vbox already unfortunately, but I think I found the issue - fsck error, code 4.

Logged in to rescue mode, ran fsck on the offending partition (my home, no less) it fixed the errors, and now it boots!!! My only complaint was that I spent an entire sick day trying to fix this rather than working, and it was a straightforward solution. Positive is that now I know how to scour the journal a bit better and fix this if it ever pops up again.

I'm wondering, is there any way to determine what caused this?
