WMAs Gstreamer & Rhythmbox

Hello all,

I'm not exactly an audiophile but I do have some music that I occasionally like to play on my PC whilst I'm working. Some of my collection is in WMA format (my cheapo MP3 player won't play .ogg files so I am stuck with .wma or .mp3).

Although I like Amarok I have a low-spec PC so it takes about a week to launch so I tend to prefer Rhythmbox. The trouble is Rhythmbox won't play the WMAs (and I am NOT talking about DRM protected ones). Amarok plays them fine. Mplayer plays them fine. Xine plays them fine - it's just Rhythmbox - my music player of choice - that won't...

The trouble I guess lies with its back-end - GStreamer. Now I am running FC5 and I have yum-installed every single GStreamer package in both the FC5 Extra and the Livna repositories (except the devel packages) and still it won't work.

Can I get Rhythmbox / Gstreamer to play .wma files?

Well I know it's scorching hot in most places in the Northern Hemisphere so I guess not as many folks as usual are chained to the computer, but I was most surprised that my favourite forum was unable to help me...

No matter because I have managed to solve the problem. For the benefit of others using FC5 here is my solution:

It seems that I was relying on the packages from the Livna repository (which according to GStreamer's own site are endorsed by GStreamer). However, when I somewhat reluctantly decided to try to compile GStreamer from source to see if that would work I discovered this page on the GStreamer site which shows that GStreamer have their own yum repository. By following the instructions from that page I got the very latest (10.9) version of GStreamer which now plays .wma's just fine too....
