WLAN out of the box compatible

I am looking for a WLAN adapter either PCI or USB to run on my ubuntu 9.10.

Here is my dilemma: I am running ubuntu solo with no other OS (no MS crap). I currently have no internet connection with this PC. In the case that I cannot find a WLAN adapter that is OOB Linux compatible, is there a way that I can download the necessary drivers to CD on another computer and install it on my ubuntu PC?

FYI: I have visited the Linux Emporium and recently ordered a D-Link PCI card from them but it is not in stock at this time; and the specific card is end of life according to D-Link. The new family of card that replaced it is not linux compatible as per D-Link techs and neither is any new products. They did admit that they have dropped the ball on this matter. I am currently writing a letter to the president/CEO of the company asking that they rectify this as they are missing out on a huge consumer base.

So, I am putting this out there to discover any new WLAN adapters that are Out of the box (OOB) Linux compatible. (I am really trying not to line the pockets of Bill Gates than I have to. Maybe I should start my own company that makes Linux compatible hardware OOB!)

Thanks arcShade.

I have scowered these list that are commonly found in the forums and through the search engines and I find them to be out of date.

I have been talking to some of my friends in Europe and in the Far East; they have informed there are some chipsets made by a few manufacturers that are Linux compatible straight OOB. One of these is Alfa Networks as they have recently told me, and is the "N" range. I have also been talking with some of your mates in Birmingham and they agree that there are WLAN adapters out there that are made with linux in mind. You just have to find them and this is what I am attempting to do.

I was told that every now and then that some these company techs cruise the forums for input and research.

Once again thanks arcShade for your direction. I am hoping to bring this to somewhat of a public eye in order to have better access to OOB Hardware for Linux.

I am also seriously researching my idea about a OOB Hardware company espicially for Linux.
