How do I start to configure a wireless connection. I have used Wiki and I have found that this has not been configured. I have tried to use the GUI but have got no where. Any advice?

1. what is your wireless hardware?
2. what encryption protocol is used by the wireless router?

What's the distribution & version? What have you done to date? Error message(S)? Logs?

Read the next two links to help you in formulating a good question and support information;

The WG311 has an Atheros chipset (version 1) or an Intel chipset (v2).

In the case of an Atheros chipset, install the madwifi drivers (they should be in the Ubuntu repositories). For the Intel chipset, use the acx100 driver (also needs to be installed).

With any luck that will all be handled nicely by your package manager.

Notes about the WG311 regarding driver requirements from the madwifi site.

Rev 01 works fine with Madwifi(ng?) under Ubuntu 7.04 with NetworkManager.
Rev 02 has a TI chip, and is not compatible (Device Information : 104c:9066, Work with ndiswrapper).
Rev 03 has a Marvell Chip, and is also not compatible (Device Information : 11ab:1faa (rev 03), Work with ndiswrapper)

I really appreicate all the info about setting up the WLAN. I wanted to provide a little more detail...
Installed - SUSE 10.3 on DELL 8100...P4 CPU...new WD 320 GB EIDE HD...new NETGEAR WG311 wifi card
I have never installed LINUX on a machine. I have done very little work in the LINUX OS...I have taken a couple of classes...but nothing hands on. I know I have jumped in up to my eyes, but I have got this far with lots of help from the great people here on this site. I have read the WIKI pages on networking and there is alot of great info out there. But I am not able to locate a LINUX driver for this card. I have the CD...will that work in LINUX...before I try that...the CD ROM pobably needs to be configured. Is there a way to verify what hard ware is set up....I know I have a ton of questions.

Thanks for all the Help!

Thanks again.

I would go back to okos' post and determine exactly which revision wireless gizmo you have:

lspci (list PCI Bus ID + Vendor String)
lspci -n (list PCI Bus ID + VendorID:ProductID)

Match up the PCI Bus IDs to find out what the VendorID:ProductID is for your wireless gizmo. From there you may find the information posted (and linked) by okos to be useful for you.

You can also search for "Suse 10.3" and "NETGEAR WG311" and the WG311 version as well; odds are someone has already described what you need to do for Suse 10.3.

Reading some of the documention for opensuse and the wg311 card, I think I have figured out that I need to install ndiswrapper....I have found this but I am not exactly sure how to download a .tar file...do I load it to CD and install on my linux box? Do I connect my linux box to the internet and download in directly? If I should load on CD how do I load a .tar file to a CD and open it? I tried to just load it on the CD but there does not appear to be any files on the disc. I know I have a ton of questions, but this is really becoming a headache and I'm stuck.

Thanks,
Travis
