Wireshark Error

Hello,

I was trying to switch on monitor mode when capturing packets on wireshark. The checkbox showed up for a second and then when I clicked it it dissapeared. Now everytime i go to run a live capture i get this error.

"The capture session could not be initiated (That device doesn't support monitor mode).

Please check to make sure you have sufficient permissions, and that you have the proper interface or pipe specified."

I can bypass this, and do a capture if i select the interface in the capture tab, and then select options and run a capture that way, but I'd rather figure out how to get rid of the error. Anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks!

Some posts suggest you change permissions on /dev/ for the device so that a user or any user can use it.

anytime i try to access any of the files in the dev folder, it says they are not regular and won't let me open them. any other ideas? i have no problem admitting that i am a complete novice. I have been reading up on this crap all day, and wouldn't be trying to capture packets if it weren't for a computer class i'm taking.

Do you run wireshark as a regular user? Is that user in the wireshark group? Also, if I recall right, you have to run it as root to get all permisions and options.

I'm root when i run it. its simply saying that my adapter doesn't support monitor mode. i've been online making sure that my chipset set has the correct driver for it, and all indications suggest that it does. there is no reason why my computer should be showing this error but for some reason it does.

Some odd devices do not support promiscuous mode, might be the driver also.

Give some info about the wifi card and perhaps the modules loaded.
Back in backtrack 2 days I had to create a virtual device with airmon-ng, which could enter monitor mode. The mother device (wifi0) couldn't enter monitor mode.
