Recently installed Slackware 12.1 on my Dell Inspiron 8600. After many long nights I finally got my infamous wireless card working (Broadcom bcm4401). I used iwconfig to connect to the linksys wireless network used by everyone else at my house. According to iwconfig as well as KWiFiManager, I have a great connection. However, I still can't access the web. I think this is because I am at a loss about what to enter into the netconfig fields. How exactly do I configure my wireless network? Any help would be appreciated.

For example, what DNS server should I specify? And on Windows and Ubuntu my machine automatically had a particular IP address. No clue what it was. Does it need to be the same?

Have you established a default route through your gateway? Manually it looks something like this, though I usually screw up something when trying to post it:

#route add default gw 192.168.0.1 ath0

You will also need to run dhcp, assuming that your router is acting as a dhcp server.

#dhclient, or dhcpcd, or whatever your dhcp command is.

There is usually a way to tie this all together during boot. On Debian and derivatives, it's in the /etc/network/interfaces file. On slackware, I dunno. Hopefully someone else will chime in with the needed help.

exactly - turns out that the netconfig program wasn't enough. the command:

dhcpcd wlan0



did the trick

You can put the settings for your network interfaces in /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf.
