Wireless is disabled by hardware switch on Ubuntu 12.04.
I have instlled Ubuntu 12.04. on my Dell Inspirion Mini 1018. After doing one of regular updates, my wifi stop working, and it gives me message "Wireless is disabled by hardware switch".
How can I enable it? I tried opening network connections, but there I find: Wireless Unavaible. Hardware Address 1C:65:9D:68:9E:6B What should I do? I found now Broadcom STA wireless driwer as aditional driver that is instaled and curently in use. This might cause problem? Should I remove it? |
I had encountered that message a few times when the firmware was missing. Check firmware-b43-installer and b43-fwcutter. Check in /lib/firmware make sure it's there.
|
I installed first that two you mentioned. How do I check if /lib/firmware is there?
|
I think I did something I shouldn't. I removed Broadcom STA wireless driwer, and now I can't find it via software center. Blonde in the house of Linux, help, please !!!
|
LOL@blonde. Sorry couldn't help it.
Does your wireless work at all now with the firmware installed from those packages? The Broadcom STA is a proprietary driver, but for roughly the same cards that the b43 kernel module serves. /lib/firmware is always there as that is where the firmware is kept, there would be a subdirectory b43 for your wireless firmware. Can you open a terminal, and paste the output of lspci here? |

Ah, you do not have a Broadcom wireless card according to that listing, which explains why the Broadcom driver and firmware do not work.
You nead firmware-realtek and wireless-tools installed. You will probably have to enable the extra repositories, which I do not know how to do with Software Center, but if you install Synaptic Package Manager (if not already installed), then go to Settings -> Repositories and enable the extra repositories (Universe and Multiverse, IIRC). Then install those two packages. |
i have it already installed. I did system testing, but I can't read it. Before on 10.4. I could see mht wrong with wifi... here is one information I found, not sure what it means: 26.168792] rtl8192ce 0000:07:00.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 17 (level, low) -> IRQ 17

I have Broacom wifi card, but I think that I removed software, and no do not have idea what to do next.... |
These two lines are telling you that your Wi-Fi is controlled by a Realtek device

Open up the dash in unity and type aditional driver and run the application that shows there. Rememeber you will need to have a internet connection to do that. Good luck to you. |
I do not know what is Unity. How to start using it, and how to find it? I tried via dash, no results
|
Look, what I did yesterday was I REMOVED "Broadcom STA wireless driwer". I know I need that back but I do not know how to do it. When I used Ubuntu 10.4. it was possible tu disable it and than enable it... I tried the same, but I removed it totaly. :(

If you click on the very first icon, the one with the Ubuntu Logo then a search field will open type there Additional Drivers, then an icon will appear that looks like it has a video card on it, then search for aditional drivers with that. |
I instelled, thanks. Now I have two drivers that do not work.
