wireless connection problems

I have installed ubuntu 9.04 as a dual boot with xp and ubuntu on their own hardrives.

I originally had problems connecting via lan or wireless with 'Network Manager'and followed advice I received on an erlier thread I posted to use 'Wicd Network Manager'.

With 'Wicd' I was able to connect to the internet via lan ethernet cable with no problems but I could still not connect to my wireless network although it does show up in 'Wicd'. I have enabled manual connection settings in wicd to connect to my network to use static ip addresses for my computers on my network which works fine with the lan connection.

I followed advice I received in an earlier thread which suggested using
ndiswrapper but could not make any real sense of what to to using the link provided in the thread. I then did a google search 'how to use ndiswrapper ubuntu' and followed the instructions at
"https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/Ndiswrapper#Load the new driver module".

After following the configuration instructions below I immediatly lost my lan connection and wicd network manager will not open anymore.

3.1. Disable Free Drivers
Firstly, all releases since Ubuntu 6.06 have the open source bcm43xx driver, which was replaced in 8.04 by b43 and b43legacy, see WifiDocs/Driver/bcm43xx. If this driver doesn't work for you, then you should disable it, because it will conflict with ndiswrapper. To disable it, add blacklist bcm43xx lines for each driver to the modprobe blacklist.

I continued on until instruction 3.6 'configuring wireless network settings' where I could not continue as I could not understand the instructions.

Now I have no internet connection and it appears no network manager.

It seems you disabled drivers for your ethernet card as well. It is just a guess though. Hence you do not have internet.

lspci -vv should give more information on what network chip you are using.

lsmod should give if you are using correct modules.

Paste the output for both the commands.

Also post the output for ifconfig -a

What about the drivers I disabled for ethernet?

I will try to make some sense of the links you provided over the next few days.

Should they work for 9.04 as the instructions relate to earlier versions than mine?

Will I need to follow all the links or try one at a time until it works?

Also what about the drivers I disabled which stopped my ethernet connection and wicd network manager from working? How can I get wicd and my ethernet working again for the time being until i sort out wireless.

You can start the wicd as a service I guess. And you can use services menu in system > administration to turn on or off the services at logon. You can add wicd there if its not there.

Above two links are for wireless. You can look into them one by one.
Your wired network should work without after wicd is enabled. But if it does not then you will need to install the driver. At least modprobe the module sis900.

Edit:
And the instructions should work for you as well. There is no harm in trying.

Could be moved to networking but not wireless. OP does not just has issues with wireless but with wired as well.

could run a quick test connecting the hard wire and use the terminal to get an IP

$ dhclient eth0
$ ifconfig

Check to see if he gets an IP for eth0, if so hard wire works fine and once he has a working driver can set the connectivity with a few more commands. But either way this should get his laptop connected under linux while he trouble shoots the wireless card.

I went to System > Administration > Services
Wicd was not listed and I could not find option to add Wicd
I also went to System > Preferences > Startup Applications
Wicd is listed and selected.
Wicd is still listed in Applications > Internet but when I go to start the program wicd window tries to open but it then just disappears.
How do I install the driver to make wicd work again?
You suggest modprobe the module sis900. Can you please explain how to do this step by step?

If wicd is not installed correctly, you can anyways reinstall it.
About modprobe, you man modprobe for more details. You can just pass the module name as an argument to the command.
To obtain the ip address using dhclient, use sudo as it says permission denied.

Chaitanya - I did reinstall wicd but the same problem persists - Wicd shows up in Applications > Internet but it wont open.

I still cant work out modprobe, what am I supposed to do with modprobe?

My wired lan connection immediately stopped when I followed instructions to disable drivers. These are the instructions I followed :-

How can I restore these drivers which I disabled?

looks like your eth0 is no longer up like it was before. Notice how the ifconfig only reports your loop back where as before it also had eth0? Your going to have to bring it up again. If you have sudo set up you can use the commands as listed below otherwise run the commands without the "sudo" and run as root.

$ sudo ifconfig eth0 up
$ sudo dhclient eth0
$ ifconfig eth0

There is ACX111 and how to set it up natively for linux. My guess is the fw needs to be loaded, as it doesn't usually come on a system. Anyways I hope this link helps you understand installing the wireless.

eth1 has wireless, if you don't get anything under iwconfig for wireless then it's the drivers. You should leave everything else alone and try to get the acx to work off of one of the 3 links we posted. Once you get iwconfig to show a wireless extention for ethx or wlanx then either reboot or try wicd again. It should all be working after that.

Now what do you suggest in order to get wicd working again and attempt to get my wireless connection working, your advice has been spot on so far!
