Wireless and shutdown issues with Goblinx, and I'm quite green at Linux

I'm again planning some time in my life to learn linux, and I have a few issues. A Toshiba laptop A215-S6816 is my classroom. It came with Vista and I have loaded GoblinX on a separate partition. I have tried to activate my wireless with no success. The error message states that the wireless network cannot be detected, I insured that it is activated and still no luck.
My second issue is on shutdown I get a screen that the colors are all reversed and extremely hard to decipher. The screen stays like that until I physically remove the power.
Yes I'm quite new to Linux but very determined to learn.
Thanks!!

TX packets:4 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B)
Interrupt:22 Base address:0x4000

Link encap: Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1
RX packets:4 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:4 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
Collisions:0 txqueuelen:0

I do not see any IP addresses in my wireless
Thanks for all your help!
