winxp + suse8.2 boot-trouble

hi there :)

i installed suse 8.2 a few days ago.
as loader i used grub.
when i was booting the system i saw the linux boot manager, then i chose windows and t took me to the XP loader . when i was trying to start xp i got the following message: HAL.DLL not foud or damaged. please install a new one *grrrr*
well, i installed XP again and then i re-installed linux, but i got the same error.

is this a specific windows XP error after installing linux?

partitions on my HD:

c:\ NTFS 20 GB (WinXP system)
d:\ FAT32 5 GB (for linux)
e:\ NTFS 75 GB

hmmm, no I dont think so. Welcome, by the way ;)

from linux can you traverse the windows filesystem? can you check to see if hal.dll exists. I cant remember the path for the file though, I've not used windows for a while now.

One idea to get around this problem would be to reinstall windows (bummer!) then boot off your linux CD and use the option to "start an installed system" once in, you can login as root and reinstall grub into the boot sector. And take a backup of hal.dll ;)

I heard that NTLDR starts acting weird when the partition arrangement is changed (like looking on the wrong partition for hal.dll)
