winrar or zip


are there any programs on linux that are similar to winrar or winzip as i can't seem to open files i download which is making the whole linux experience slightly frustrating

Depending on your distro, try ark or file roller. They work in a similar manner to Winzip etc.

Also, as an afterthought, if the file is a tar.gz, as most archives are, you can open a console and extract it like this
Code:
tar -xzvf <filename>.tar.gz
man tar for all the options

I think he's asking about extracting .rar files specifically - which doesn't seem to be supported in Mandrake 10. I haven't figured out how to open .rar files yet, but would love to hear a solution if someone wants to save me some research

Linux version of the rar utility is available for download:

You can run winrar via wine as well, if you want.

I just wonder if there is any other alternative for Winrar in Linux? Fileroller seems not to work with .rar for me in FC3.

Does anyone has any recommendation?

ark works well with it. or like someone said, use winrar under wine.
