Winmodem Problems

I'm a newB to Linux, but have much experience with Windows. I've been working with Knoppix and SUSE off of a CD. SUSE didn't recognize my modem so I decided to go with a Debian load from the Knoppix CD. But when I finished the install and ran Debian, it didn't detect the modem either.

Yes, it is a winmodem, but the SUSE hardware list and linmodems both say it should work. It's a USR 56 Int PnP. I've read through many forums and tried many times using lspci and setserial to get the modem working, but have been unsuccessful.

My question to more experienced users. Are there files or information that I can access once I've run Knoppix off the CD and the modem is working that will give me definitive information I can use to configure the modem unde SUSE and Debian?

Appreciate any suggestions. Am having fun learning Linux, but sure would like to be able to get to the Internet. It's hard to learn when switching back into windows to find answers, etc.

Thanks. TW

A winmodem will need a driver. Search for it.
In knoppix you can try running lsmod or 'ps -A', and look for stuff that looks like it has something to do with the modem. The name of what you're looking for will aid you in your search.

www.linmodems.org also has some resources for getting some wimodems to work in Linux.
