Winmodem?

Trying to install Damnsmall and can't get connected. Dedicated Linux box, no Windows. After much trying I've finally discovered I may have a winmodem. US Robotics Sportster 0481.http://www.usr.com/search/search-res...28&search.y=19 If this is a winmodem, (it plugs into the MB) is it possible to get it to work or do I need a "serial modem"?

go to

www.linmodems.org

Lucent winmodems work well with this driver, not sure about your's though.

you will want to get something like this

ltmodem-8.26a9.tar.gz

or an rpm file for Mandrake if it exists. have a look at http://rpm.pbone.net/

and type

ltmodem-8.26a9*.rpm

in the search box and select Mandrake 9.X and the "new ftp search" option

did it just then and got two results

I can't download anything on the "Linux only" box as it has no OS. Damnsmall can't connect. Unless there's someway to download it to a flop.

yes just put it on a floppy from a windows machine then transfer it over through that.

to mount a floppy type

mount -t auto /dev/floppy /mnt/floppy

the floppy will then be mounted under /mnt/floppy

/dev/ttyS0 is COM1 in DOS...if you plugged the serial modem into the first COM port then that is it. The S has to be capital and the 0 is a zero not the letter. try /dev/ttyS1 /dev/ttyS2 and so on till it works if you don't know what port it is on.

You can hear the dial tone but it won't dial. Moot now, it smoked out. Used POS. Thanks for the reply.
