WINE questions in openSUSE...
I installed wine and it's working OK, but I have a question.
Once I've installed a program using wine, in my case, Quake III arena, how do I uninstall it? There are so many runtime issues with Quake that I don't want to deal with right now that I'd rather see it removed.
When I do a search in SUSE for 'uninstalling software' it comes up empty. So I wonder how to do it in SUSE too.
How do I uninstall software installed into SUSE?
How do I uninstall software installed using WINE?
Wine comes with a "remove programs" gui. Just run "uninstaller" in a terminal. Also, some big programs come with their own uninstallers, usually found in their installation directories as "uninstall.exe" or somesuch.
Finally, it's usually no big deal just to delete the installation files and directories directly. It might leave behind a few shared .dll files and registry entries, but those don't usually do much harm when in wine. If you really want you can run "regedit" (another wine built-in) and manually delete entries just like you would on Windows.
I believe that Suse uses yum, so to "uninstall" a program:
Suse uses "yast"/"zypper" as a package manager
But the method used to uninstall a program depends of how it was installed. If it was installed from source, then it depends on whether or not the author provided scripts to uninstall it.
OK, I tried wine uninstaller and it comes up but does not show Quake III as an installed program.
Q3 does run from the desktop icon...
I found an unwise32 program in a Q3 subdirectory and when I run it in Wine it does call itself the Uninstall program, with a nice GUI and all. It runs and appears to work, but does not uninstall the program.
So, any ideas?
PS Thx for the yum info...strange that SUSE's help doesn't have anything about that.
Also, I'll try that idea of just deleting the directories, if I fail to get the uninstall to work, hope that doesn't screw something up in Wine...
I did find that I can navigate to the wine subdirectory that has Q3, click on the run exe for Q3 and SUSE will bring up a dialog asking which program I want to use to run it. In the drop down list, Wine is shown, and one of several choices under that is 'uninstall Quake III'.
But it doesn't work, the program still runs even after the uninstall seems to run fine. So that makes it a problem with Wine and I will continue with my questions over at the Wine forum.
Unless one of you here knows what the problem is.
Wine working directory is /home/user/.wine (hidden directory)
when u first launch wine it creates this directory- it copies the files from somewhere (i dont know from where)
if you want a clean wine setup just create new user and run $wine application- new folder will be created for that user. then you can back up this directory for future use.
and dont hope that windows uninstaller deletes your desktop icon (i think you know that)- it cant read higher than .wine/c/ (at least it shouldnt).
and for quake3 there is linux binary (linux executable- which should run smoother than through wine). i have it installed myself =)
Good idea, just reinstall wine in another users directory so if I kill it by removing Q3, it will still be available.
As for Q3, thanks for the link, I'll try to install that version...
