Wine Problems (Gaming)
 

I am new to linux and have recently installed Ubuntu 8.10 64-bit os. I was hoping to be able to play the game Team Fortress 2 on the linux side of my computer. I installed wine, and successfully got steam to work, but when I try to run TF2 it becomes a blank screen. What is interesting, though is that I can hear the music and can scroll over the menu in the game, just not see anything. After messing with the power button, canceling shut down, and restoring focus to the game I can see the game, but it runs excusably slow.I was hoping that I could get this game to work better in Linux than in Vista, but no such luck. Any ideas? I am willing to install things but want to avoid paying for anything if possible.

If you have a ATI or Nvidia card..did you install there drivers or are you using the xorg drivers?

You know of $winecfg ? Games through wine are slower, try searching a linux native alternative (maybe TF has a linux client).

I have all the nvidia drivers, but have messed with display server settings. And no there is not a Linux client for tf2.

is this the first game you have tried??have you tried running a linux 3d game to see if it runs it ?Games like Sauerbraten a.k.a Cube 2...Nexiuz..Warsow..these are 3d games that are ment to run in Linux.Just to make sure you have nvidia drivers working right.And no problems.If you can run TF2 on windows with your pc ,then you should be able to run it with wine..aslong as you have nvidia drivers working..Wine is always in development..so sometimes one app or game works then they release next version and sometimes what worked before doesnt work now..As far as not being able to see ext in menus??maybe you need to install the right font..Easiest way to do that is to use winetricks..

3-d games work fine and I've been playing sauerbraten for a while. I can run steam fine and while running tf2 I can lose focus to the game and regain focus and it works, but at an unusable 9 fps. I really don't know what the problem is. Someone I talked to mentioned direct x being messed up, as tf2 is dx native. Is there a way I can check that? And also if you check the wine forums you'll see a post about this named team fortress 2 problems, and it had 0 replies (LOL).

Well..personally from my experience playing games using wine is a roll of the dice ..may work for you,may not.For me ,ive never really gotten wine to play games for me well enough to abandon windows.Some would install and start,but had bad frame rates.HalfLife 2 on wine barley get 12 fps..I can play it fine on windows on medium settings with a Ati 9800 Pro.Counter Strike is rated platinum but it plays like a slide show.Origianl HL,CS,Dod,TF and play just fine..They should.There like 10 years old.As far as the
direct x issue..you didnt install direct x in wine.??they dont recommend it as it will mess up there directX.
