wine problem!!load notepad but don't know what to do next

Hi! I had manage to install wine with a few problem and I could open notepad with it but I seem to run out of idea.like,what to do to install I.E and game and other thing,When I install wine I had run into a program .Frist I install it with RPM (mandrake 9.1) but it wouldn't creat .wine folder and copy system .dll into it .So I download a tar version and excute .winelaucher.Now it created frake window drive ,copy some .dll file and I could use notepad (I wouldn't install wine just to use notepad)but in shell it show one error
# unable to grep /mnt/windows/msdos.sys: child process exited abnormally

I really don't know what it that mean (mnt/windows is hda on window xp:I gonna deleted window xp if I could put window 98 or other window software on wine or win4lin);

Please tell me what to do next like install window program or even Os;

thanks!!

Don't really know and probably missunderstanding. Put something else executable from Windows in the same directory as notepad, if there isn't something suitable there, say 'calculator.exe' if it's still called that, and then run it by doing whatever you did for notepad.

Hope helps but doubt it.:)

ngan_yine - I know your used to your windows notepad program but adapt. Programs run BEST on their native operating system. Since they were programed and designed to work on windows alone, its best that you dont use notepad.

Take a look at kwrite and other LINUX programs. Try to stay away from emulating (i know wine doesnt emulate but mentally it does) windows programs.

You'll find out before long linux programs are actually a LOT better than winblows programs
good luck!

I am not trying to use notepad but I was just testing it in wine .I am sharing my com with 2 HD with my brother and father .My brother is a hardcore window user and my dad is aftraid of trying new thing ,specially when he have to write report in it .So I decided to put on some Window software for them so it would make my life easier like whenever they want to use computer they reboot into window and I am getting tried of it and I want to free up my other HD and put on linux(mandrake) but can' t do that and another problem is that we are from myanmar(burma) and my dad need to write in our language . I did install font and show him how to use openoffice for writing and saving and changin format to use with his office with he's still stuborn and never want to try it .Like most of the old guy ,he never want to try new thing ,sad though.

thanks for the advice but I really need to install IE and maybe win98 on mandrake.not for me but for them!!

going through and installing ALL OF WINDOWS is going to be an effort in futility. I would suggest another harddrive for your computer. Wine is nice, but for an app here and there. Win4Lin may suite your needs, but it is $$$
Otherwise, save your money and get an older computer on which linux will run very nicely all for yourself and you can keep it up for months at a time.
