first run "wineprefixcreate" . This command will create the .wine directory in your home folder and
after that you should be able to use wine

delete the .wine directory and run wineprefixcreate
just open a terminal (xterm/konsole..) and type wineprefixcreate (it is usually /usr/bin/wineprefixcreate)

after that you should see the config file

Preferably as a non-root user run the following command
winecfg

winecfg should be in /usr/bin/winecfg

this will give u a GUI to edit the config file

when i do the winecfg i get this message and the GUI

winecfg
Warning: the specified Windows directory L"c:\\windows" is not accessible.
Warning: the specified System directory L"c:\\windows\\system" is not accessible .
fixme:winecfg:WinMain The winecfg tool is not yet complete, and does not actuall y alter your configuration.
fixme:winecfg:WinMain If you want to alter the way Wine works, look in the ~/.wi ne/config file for more information.

when i type
#wine notepad
at terminal
i get this message

Warning: the specified Windows directory L"c:\\windows" is not accessible.
Warning: the specified System directory L"c:\\windows\\system" is not accessible.

and it opens the notepad

if i try other applications like
$ wine sol
Warning: the specified Windows directory L"c:\\windows" is not accessible.
Warning: the specified System directory L"c:\\windows\\system" is not accessible.
wine: cannot open (null)

$ wine sol.exe
Warning: the specified Windows directory L"c:\\windows" is not accessible.
Warning: the specified System directory L"c:\\windows\\system" is not accessible.
wine: cannot open (null)

i get these error messages and they dont open the applications

when i open gui and add some application exes. they dont open and when i open it again i cant see them.

please help me out

update: i can open some applications in root with finding the original exe file and using wine to do it like
wine /mnt/windows/"Program Files"/videolan/vlc/vlc.exe
it opens the application but cannot do anything with it. cannot open any video.

winecfg now doesnt work in other users. it cannot even open notepad now

do i need to install wine-devel package and wine i686 packages with i386 pavkage ( one i installed)

please help me out
thanks

At the console or terminal type "whereis wine". Go through the list of directories and find the sample config file. Next copy it to "~/.wine". It should then work.

The symbol ~ designates your home directory path.

I created the backup directory just in case wine corrupts the reg files. The c: and z: in dosdevices was created by wine when I tried to run notepad. Also c_drive and other directories underneath it was created by wine except the internet explorer, Windows Update Setup Files and Temporary Internet Files. I was trying to install IE 6 so I can use Outlook Express for my hotmail account. The c: and z: are just symbolic links. To create those, at the console type:

ln -s $HOME/.wine/drive_c $HOME/.wine/c:
ln -s $HOME $HOME/.wine/z:

Read man pages for "wine" and "wine.conf". Also read wine documentation about the format of wine's config file.

I did not use the RPM version of wine. I compiled it and install it. I do not like using RPM files.

BTW, They are not folders, they are directories in both Windows and LINUX.

Yes, you can do each one individually because the && means do the first and if you no errors comes up do the next one. Do not use ; to combine make and make install on one line because you will have a lot of problems trying to compile programs. Use ; for bash programming.

Before you compile, make sure you have the gcc compiler and other devel packages installed. While you are at it, install the kernel source code too.

After you got gcc and devel packages installed, extract the tar.gz of wine to a directory that you have write access. Make sure you have about 700 megabyte of space or more for wine to compile. You may want to rename ~/.wine to ~/.winebak or ~/.wineold, so you can start fresh.

Wine took about 1 hour and 15 minutes to compile on my system. My system is an AMD Athlon 'Classic' 700 MHz with 512 of SDRAM.

wine-devel-20040615-1fc2winehq.i386.rpm
or do u have something like the tar.gz file

please let me know i want to install it fresh with the tar.gz file. i am going to bakup my .wine folder and

instal the devel if its correct
rpm -ivh wine-devel-20040615-1fc2winehq.i386.rpm

Extract the downloaded file:
tar zxvf Wine-YYYYMMDD.tar.gz
then type:
./configure && make depend && make && su -c "make install"

will this be enough or do i need to do anything else.
do i need to install it using root or other users. because i see su -c which i guess asks for root password. can i ignore su -c if i am installing from root

please tell me if i am correct. once u conform me i will install it
