wine can't find xmessage!

Hi.

I just installed wine. Whenever I try to run a windows application (like notepad.exe) using the wine command, I get something like

Warning:
The Wine launcher is unable to find the xmessage program,
which it needs to properly notify you of Wine execution status
or problems.

I searched for xmessage but could not find a good site that explains this well.

Could someone help me with this.

Thank you in advance.

Have you downloaded the source and build wine or did you use a pre-build package (.deb/.rpm) ???

Jubei 10-31-2002 11:36 AM

I used pre build package .rpm

yes

install XFree86-Contribs

xmessage is part of this

wine will then run fine

windowsfree 02-09-2003 01:41 PM

thanx, got it to work

So can you kindly tell me where i can download this XFree86-Contribs files? I am using MK8.2 currently and i cannot find it in the disc.

salparadise 03-30-2003 12:38 AM

on mdk 9 it appears in the extras section for gnome and kde

if not
get the precise version number for your xfree86 and try
http://rpmfind.net

tanchu 03-31-2003 09:16 AM

Have tried using rpmfind.net but disappointed, still no result. The wine program keeping prompting me the message: cannot find xmessage. Even tried using the command ln -s gmessage xmessage, still show me same message.

A bit pissed off with this wine software. I really need some solution to get msoffice running, is there other alternatives ? (other than crossover office, vmware, etc).

Thanks for the help and advice, but really very upset cos still figuring how to load the damn windoze software.

salparadise 03-31-2003 11:28 AM

put up a new post asking for help on this

someone may copy it from their disk and mail it to you

alternatively get the latest version of wine (this MAY help but i can't be sure)

tanchu 04-01-2003 08:09 AM

I have already download the most recent wine 20030318 but still cannot load the program. So anyone can email me the xmessage files and the procedure for loading this files to let wine detect it?

Elemental to most of you here maybe, but I'm new to linux and never was really good with windoze either. hmm.
Problem is: how do I do that? "using appropriate path"? Could someone please give a pausible example?
I installed wine and all that is missing now is this darned "xmessage"
I have XFree86-Contribs installed but still..
thank you for your time

On Mandrake 9.1 the package is actually called X11R6-contrib. Which is odd as almost all of their X packages are called XFree86-[blah]. Ah well.
