wine: Babaschess installation and running fails

Hi,

I installed wine and a few things on it. Now I have problems installing or running the programs I actually want to have. The easiest one of them to install should be Babaschess with which I want to start, now. Maybe you can tell me what to do next? I read, that using an existing windows partition is a bad habit, becaus it can be damaged, I'd better like a solution with a fake windows. But of course any solution is welcome :-)

I installed:
Internet Explorer 6 - working
Windows Media Player 9 - working a bit (runs but some "skin" is missing)
Windows 98SE service Pack

I had two different attempts to run the program and both failed.

Attempt 1)

Installing the program under linux. After wine SetupBabasChess_3_9_beta_nonXP.exe I get a pop up window telling me: invald command line parameter Windows installer V 2.00 2600.2.
This happens with older versions of Babaschess, too. So this must be a problem of the installer. Then I downloaded the 3rd version of windows installer, which gave me the error:
wine WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86.exe
wine-pthread: virtual.c:702: map_file_into_view: Assertion `start + size <= view->size' failed.
Maybe this is understandable, since I installed the Windows 98SE service pack and the installer version 3 is only for a windows higher than 2000, but I don't know.
By the way, would it be okay to install service packs of different windows versions, if it worked, or do I have to choose one for me, like win98se?

Attempt 2)

I tried to use my existing windows installation of Babaschess. The main window of Babaschess appears but then nothing else happens anymore. It just stays that way and doesn't load the program.
The errors are:

Then I have to ps -ax and kill the programm. Then I tried to copy the existing installation to my fake windows and did the same there, but the result did not differ.

In my home directory there are 4 different wine's. They were made with installing the programms:
.wine.0609291241/, .wine, .wine.0609291233/, .wine.0609291230/ Is this any bad?

This is my .wine config file:

Since many people viewed this thread, maybe this is a difficult problem. Today, since I got a bit free time, I un and reinstall the whole things and maybe this time it works. I think I leave the specific windows version update out, since I suspect it to make things difficult.

What do you think about installing windows updates on wine? I had the idea that many dll.s are overwritten, so it might be a good thing, but I'm not so sure about it anymore.

I think you're right. I think that the people who have read this question didn't have any specific ideas to help. I would say that this software may not be supported under WINE. You can check the application support database at www.winehq.org.

Windows updates do not apply to WINE. The WINE project does not create a virtual Windows machine. Nor does it use Windows code. It just maps Windows API calls to X API calls and Linux kernel API calls. I don't know about updates for the Windows applications such as Internet Exporer but I would guess that you cannot apply updates to that via WINE.
